Prime-Time Ratings: Weekend Highlights

-Friday's Winners:
The Price is Right (CBS), House R (Fox)

-Friday's Losers (excluding repeats):

Amnesia (NBC), The Return of Jezebel James (Fox), 20/20 (ABC)

-Ratings Breakdown:

CBS led this typically uneventful Friday, with a first-place finish in households, total viewers and adults 18-49. But just 7.53 million viewers and a 1.9 rating/6 share among adults 18-49 for the Eye net means that Friday remains a continued sore spot.

In series-premiere news, the cancellation clock is now officially ticking on the two-episode launch of Fox sitcom The Return of Jezebel James. Take a look:

The Return of Jezebel James (Fox)

8:00 p.m. Viewers: 3.17 million (#5), A18-49: 1.0 rating/4 share (#4t) Premiere

8:30 p.m. Viewers: 3.25 million (#5), A18-49: 1.0/ 4 (#4t)

Considering Fox already slashed the episode order from 13 to 7, don't get too used to The Return of Jezebel James. In the battle of the 8-9 p.m. game shows, CBS' The Price is Right had a considerable advantage over NBC's waiting-to-be axed Amnesia.

Friday 8 p.m.

The Price is Right (CBS)

Viewers: 8.67 million (#1), A18-49: 2.0/ 7 (#1)

Amnesia (NBC)

Viewers: 4.81 million (#3), A18-49: 1.4/ 5 (#2)

You have to wonder at this point if CBS will order more episodes of The Price Is Right and leave it in the Friday anchor position. Personally, I think it should.

Also airing in the 8 p.m. hour was the first half of the CW's soon-to-exit Friday Night Smackdown! (Viewers: #4, 4.01 million; A18-49: #3, 1.3/ 5) and a repeat of Grey's Anatomy on ABC (Viewers: #5, 3.79 million; A18-49: #4t, 1.0/ 5). Overall, Friday Night Smackdown! averaged a consistent 4.32 million viewers and a 1.4/ 5 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. I can just see those smiling faces at upcoming home MyNetworkTV next season.

At 9 p.m., a repeat of CBS' Ghost Whisperer and a repeat of Fox's House shared leadership as follows:

Friday 9 p.m.

Ghost Whisperer R (CBS)

Viewers: 6.82 million (#1), A18-49: 1.8/ 6 (#2)

House R (Fox)

Viewers: 5.74 million (#3), A18-49: 1.9/ 6 (#1)

Worth noting for the House encore was growth out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of The Return of Jezebel James of 2.49 million viewers and 90 percent in the demo.

Rounding off the 9 p.m. hour were newsmagazines Dateline on NBC (Viewers: #2, 6.56 million; A18-49: #3, 1.7/ 5) and 20/20 on ABC (Viewers: #4, 4.73 million; A18-49: #5, 1.3/ 4), which was the first half of a two-hour edition of both, and the second hour of the CW's Friday Night Smackdown! (Viewers: #5, 4.63 million; A18-49: #4, 1.5/ 5).

The second half of NBC's Dateline led the 10 p.m. hour, with 7.20 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49. Overall, that put Dateline at a so-so 6.88 million viewers and a 1.9/ 6 in the demo from 9-11 p.m. Capping off the time period was a repeat of CBS' Numb3rs (Viewers: #2, 7.10 million; A18-49: #3, 1.8/ 6) and the second half of 20/20 on ABC (Viewers: #3, 5.89 million; A18-49: #2, 1.9/ 6). Overall, 20/20 averaged a very modest 5.31 million viewers and a 1.6/ 5 in the demo from 9-11 p.m.

-Saturday's Winners:

Cops (Fox), America's Most Wanted (Fox)

-Saturday's Losers (excluding repeats):

The night overall

-Ratings Breakdown:

Fox may not be a powerhouse on Saturday, but veteran combination of Cops and America's Most Wanted were more than enough to dominate the evening with a first-place finish in each half hour. NBC ranked in the distant No. 2 spot, followed by CBS and lowly ABC.

Two episodes of Cops (original and repeat) kicked-off the evening for Fox with an average 6.47 million viewers and a 2.4/ 9 among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. That led into America's Most Wanted at a typically compatible 6.47 million viewers and a 2.3/ 8 in the demo at 9 p.m. While each series may not be what you would call a traditional winner, for a low HUT level Saturday they are both worthy of positive mention.

NBC aired repeat episodes of its overused Law & Order franchise: Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: #2, 4.63; A18-49: #2t, 0.9/ 3), Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #2, 5.19 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.1/ 4) and granddaddy Law & Order (Viewers: #1, 6.27 million; A18-49: #1, 1.6/ 5), which is poised to return next season.

Next up was CBS with its combination of a repeat of Cold Case (Viewers: #3, 3.18 million; A18-49: #2t, 0.9/ 3), a repeat of Criminal Minds (Viewers: #3, 4.58 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.1/ 4) and 48 Hours Mystery (Viewers: #2, 5.81 million; A18-49: #2, 1.4/ 5).

Last, and very least, was ABC's encore line-up of two repeat episodes of Here Come the Newlyweds (Viewers: #4, 2.65 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 3 from 8-10 p.m. just what we needed!) and The BachelorAll in the Family, MASH, The Jeffersons, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, The Facts of Life, The Golden Girls and Empty Nest? What happened?

-Fading Fast:

Oprah's Big Give (ABC)

-Yesterday's Losers (Excluding Repeats):

Big Brother 9 (CBS), Everybody Hates Chris (CW), Aliens in America (CW), Unhitched (Fox)

-Ratings Breakdown:

It was a Sunday of split leadership in the overnights, with ABC and CBS tied for the No. 1 spot (and ABC expected to dominate among adults 18-49 once the fast nationals are posted at PIFeedback). Just one-tenth of a rating point behind was NBC, followed by Fox and the CW. Overall, there was not much to unfortunately say.

CBS granddaddy 60 Minutes took the 7 p.m. hour, with an 8.6 rating/15 share. Next was the first half of a two-hour edition of NBC's Dateline (4.8/ 9), followed by America's Funniest Home Videos on ABC (4.5/ 8), repeats of Fox's King of the Hill (2.3/ 4) and American Dad (2.5/ 4), and a repeat of America's Next Top Model on the CW (1.1/ 2). Damn that dreaded word repeat!

ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition won the 8 p.m. hour in the overnights, with a 7.1/11. Next was the second half of NBC's Dateline at a 6.7/11, building in every half hour as follows:

Dateline (NBC)

7:00 p.m. 4.4/ 8 (#2)

7:30 p.m. 5.1/ 9 (#2)

8:00 p.m. 6.4/10 (#2)

8:30 p.m. 6.9/11 (#1)

ABC's sugary Oprah's Big Give slipped to second (behind NBC's aforementioned Dateline) in the 9 p.m. hour, with a 6.5/10 in the overnights. Take a look at the three week track:

Oprah's Big Give

3/02/08: 9.8/15 (#1)

3/09/08: 7.7/12 (#1)

3/16/08: 6.5/10 (#2)

Third at 9 p.m. was a repeat of CBS' Cold Case (5.9/ 9), followed by a repeat of Fox's Family Guy (4.4/ 7) and week three of Unhitched (series low 2.9/ 4), and repeats of the CW's Girlfriends (0.8/ 1) and The Game (0.9/ 1).

A repeat of NBC's Law & Order: SVU was first at 10 p.m., with a 5.9/10. Next was week three of ABC's goofy Here Come the Newlyweds (4.6/ 8), which could still generate some interest among adults 18-49, followed by another repurposed episode of Dexter on CBS (4.5/ 7). While Dexter is no blockbuster, it fits well out of the Cold Case encores.
