The Box-Office Top Five
#1 "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" ($63.5 million)
#2 "Role Models" ($19.3 million)
#3 "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" ($9.3 million)
#4 "Changeling" ($7.3 million)
#5 "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" ($5.6 million)
An uninspired sequel of a movie that wasn't that good to begin with won the weekend box office. And, no, this isn't a repeat of last week. Or the week before.
Starring the voice talents of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett Smith, "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" won the weekend box office with a three-day tally of $63.5 million — roughly $2 million more than the original film made over the four-day Memorial Day weekend in 2005.
"Role Models," starring Seann William Scott and Paul Rudd, came in a strong second with $19.3 million. Director David Wain is no doubt thinking the same thing we are: Bring on "Wet Hot American Summer: The Musical."
In third place, "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" fell 39 percent to bank $9.3 million in its third week of release. The song-and-dance flick starring Zac Efron and his wink brought its overall total to $75.7 million.
Clint Eastwood's "Changeling" and Kevin Smith's "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" rounded out the top five, with $7.3 million and $6.5 million, respectively.
Among other new releases, "Soul Men," starring Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mac, tanked at the box office, with a sixth-place finish of just $5.6 million.
Upcoming Releases
Coming off the best Bond movie in history, Daniel Craig returns with the most ridiculously titled: "Quantum of Solace" opens in 3,400 theaters.
