Emmy Awards switch to a new home

By Kimberly Nordyke

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) -
Emmy has a new home.
Television's top awards show is moving from the Shrine
Auditorium to the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles
starting this year, when the 60th annual event is scheduled for
September 21.

The Nokia Theatre, which opened last October, will hold
about 6,500 attendees, which is slightly more than the Shrine.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which organizes the
Emmys, has signed a 10-year deal with the theater's managers.

The Shrine hosted the Emmys for nine of the last 10 years.
The one exception was 2001, in the immediate aftermath of the
September 11 attacks; after two postponements, the academy held
the event in Century City. The 62-year-old hall, which has also
hosted the Oscars and the Grammys, is fast losing out to newer
facilities.

"All of the major awards shows have moved from place to
place," said academy chairman and CEO John Shaffner. "The Emmys
began in small rooms in Hollywood and outgrew that. Now we've
outgrown the Shrine, and this (new venue) gives us
opportunities to expand in a number of positive directions."

The first awards show to air in the Nokia Theatre was the
American Music Awards in November. Lee Zeidman, senior vp at
AEG and GM of the Nokie Theatre said discussions are under way
with two other major awards shows, though he declined to be
specific, and that executives are looking to host a total of
four ceremonies annually.
